There have been several different vacuums from Eureka that have been called “The Boss,” and the most recent is the Eureka Boss Smartvac 4870MZ.
Eureka has been a household name for decades and has built its reputation on solid and reliable products. The current reincarnation of the Eureka Boss is no exception.
The Smartvac 4870MZ is a vacuum to contend with. It is powerful in addition to being an excellent option for allergy sufferers.
What is the Eureka Boss?
- Top rated by a leading consumer publication
- Onboard tools and stretch hose for above-floor cleaning; 30ft power cord
- Wide 15-inch cleaning path provides faster results; 3-stage dust trap system
The Eureka Boss Smartvac 4870MZ is a bagged vacuum with a sealed HEPA filtration system inside. There are several other features that you’ll appreciate, too.
With several different height options available, you can adjust it to the height best suited for your floor. Do keep in mind, though, that the vacuum is best suited for mid-pile to low-pile carpets as well as hard floors.
That doesn’t mean it doesn’t clean high-pile carpet, but it does take considerably longer to get the job completed. If you have a plush carpet, then you’ll want to take some extra time to ensure that it actually gets clean.
In fact, Tyson G left a comment over on Amazon stating this very thing. “It gets the carpet clean, lots of suction, but it is somewhat heavy and hard to push over thick pile carpet.”
Some people like to see the nitty gritty specs for appliances like the Eureka Boss. For those of you out there, here is a quick rundown of the specifications for this particular vacuum.
15 inches long
Bagged or bagless:
four – dusting brush, crevice tool, pet hair removal tool, and upholstery nozzle
Limited 1-year from Eureka
The thirty-foot cord means you’ll be able to cover a decent amount of ground, but that 21 pounds can be a beast to push and pull as you clean.
On the other hand, the sealed system inside means you won’t have to deal with allergens being re-released into the air after vacuuming.
How It Compares
There are two suction control settings on the Eureka Boss Smartvac 4870MZ. One setting is for simple vacuuming, and the other is called the “power hose mode” which is better for cleaning curtains or ceiling fans.
Inside, you’ll find a HEPA filtration system. It uses a true HEPA filter which means that it captures 99.97% of all particles 0.3 microns and larger. True HEPA filtration is essential for allergy sufferers because it means that fewer allergens will find their way back to your air once they get sucked up by your vacuum.
There is also a clear window above the brush roller which is fantastic. The window allows you to monitor the brush roller as it is working. This is especially useful if you tend to get hair stuck on the brush, so you can keep an eye on just how often you need to clean it out.
You’ll also appreciate the difference in height adjustment. There are seven different adjustment options, making it highly flexible when it comes to going from hard floors to carpeting. The only thing that may cause a minor annoyance is where the adjustment knob is located – it’s on the front near the bottom of the vacuum.
Many vacuums have a swivel feature, but the Eureka Boss Smartvac does not. Even still, the vacuum is comfortable to use thanks to the ergonomic handle at the top. It’s a good thing that the Boss is comfortable to use because it is a heavy vacuum.
Weighing in at around 20 pounds, it is one of the heavier vacuums on the market. It will get heavier as the bag fills, so it is not usually a good choice if you intend to use it on the stairs. You’d be better off with a vacuum like the Shark Navigator Lift-Away because it is lighter as well as suitable for stair use.
- Dust cup capacity 1.1 quarts; Lift away; Press a button to lift the canister away and easily clean hard to reach areas
- Anti Allergen Complete Seal Technology plus a HEPA filter; Traps 99.9 percent of dust and allergens inside the vacuum
- Powerful and lightweight; Portable and versatile at only 12.5 pounds
If you intend to keep this vacuum on a single floor, then it’s an excellent option to move forward with. When you add the hose, you’ll get approximately six more feet of reach which is great for getting to those pesky ceiling fan blades that harbor all kinds of dust and dirt.
This vacuum also does not have a low profile, nor can it recline too far back which makes it difficult to clean under couches and end tables. You will have to move stuff around to get under low furniture.
For those of you with pets, you will, however, appreciate the power behind their pet hair extraction tool, the “Power Paw with Riser Visor.” This attachment excels at removing pet hair from upholstery as well as carpeting.
You’ll find other attachments as well that include an upholstery nozzle, a crevice tool, and a dusting brush. All can be stored onboard the central unit, which makes it easy for you to find when you need them and gives you a convenient place to store them.
If you have little ones at home that take naps or live in an apartment with neighbors above or below you, you may want to bypass this vacuum. It is very loud, and according to Reviewed.com, the sound will carry through the walls. If noise is an issue, you may consider the Bissell Zing as an option as it is on of the quieter vacuums on the market that is also relatively inexpensive.
Pros and Cons
There are plenty of pros that go along with this vacuum just as there are plenty of negatives. Consider them both with this quick layout to show you what’s what when it comes to the Eureka Boss Smartvac 4870MZ.
The Eureka Boss is an excellent option because of its overall performance so long as you can handle the noise and the weight. While it might not be the most elegant vacuum out there, it certainly gets the job done.
